Campus Alberta Counsellor Education Initiative

In the fall of 1998, an exciting partnership was formed to make graduate-level counsellor education more accessible in Alberta. The Division of Applied Psychology at the University of Calgary, the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge, and the Centre for Graduate Education in Applied Psychology at Athabasca University developed a partnership to create a distance delivery Master of Counselling degree. The first intake of students began their programs in January 2002. By 2004, approximately 100 students per year were entering the Master of counselling program, making it the largest counsellor education program in Alberta. In 2008, changing institutional priorities and growing differences between institutional policies made it necessary to transform the partnership into a loose consortium, where each institution could operate independently of the others while maintain a working relationship between the three universities.
